Web Domains

Instead of having your address as yourchurch.chweb.org, you might want something of your own without the chweb.org part. To do this, you will need your own domain.

There are lots of websites available who will do this for you, and there are lots of types of domains. Additionally, some domains are international while others relate to specific countries (though even those relating to a country are visible to the whole of the web).

The list below is a rough introduction:

  • .com - The universal favourite, used for almost anything
  • .org - Generally used for churches or non-profit making organisations
  • .gov - Governments
  • .biz - For businesses. You have to have a business to get one of these
  • .tv - For use with multimedia broadcast sites
  • .edu - For educational institutions
  • .ac - For academic institutions (usually universities)
  • And then there are country-specific domains. In the United Kingdom they have

  • .co.uk - For general use, often businesses
  • .org.uk - Like .org
  • .gov.uk - Government
  • and so on...
  • Registering country-specific domains can often only be done within those countries, but is usually much cheaper!

If you want to register www.yourchurch.org, you first need to see if it is available. If it is, you can then register it and either host your own website away from chweb.org or if you want to continue using this service then you could register using a site who offers web-forwarding. You would then use their site to forward www.yourchurch.org to yourchurch.chweb.org. Visitors to your new address would be transparently forwarded to your site with us.

We won't do this for you (though we'll try to point you in the right direction if you get stuck). Please see the links below for registrars. This isn't a complete list at all, and not necessarily the best, so take a look at a few of them and do some searching on the web before deciding what to do.

123-Reg are the cheapest we know of in the UK

Go Daddy are probably the best known in the US
